Does your Logo depict the perfection you envisioned?
The role of a “logo” as a visual entity that signifies an organisation or product cannot be overemphasised. Hence this post. Firstly, you need to have a clear understanding of what a logo should be whether it be a company logo or a product logo. The following is the definition of a logo and some related concepts.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, a logo is simply “a symbol that is used to identify a company and that appears on its products”.
In a nutshell, a logo is a sign of recognition of a company or its product in the “public eye”. Certain concepts are quite related to logos. These concepts or corporate tools like “Trademark” and “Brand” I also wish to give brief definitions as follows:
This is a recognizable sign or expression that distinguishes your products and services from competitors and can not be used without the owner’s permission. However, a trademark can be the property of an individual, business enterprise or a legal entity. It must be noted that trademark can also be a logo or a (brand) name as the case may be.
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes “brand” as “a category of products that are all made by a particular company and all have a particular name.
Closely related to this is the concept of “Branding”. This is the imprinting or engraving of a name, sign or symbol on a particular product. Thus, branding as an activity does make use of the earlier defined concepts of a logo in creating a public image for a business. It is thus deductible that a logo can be a registered Trademark of a company or its products.
Given the above definition of a logo, here are a few questions you need to consider:
To what extent do you think your company’s logo communicates your vision to the full gleam of the public?
Do you have a perfect vision for your business or its product?
Can you say your Company logo represents the perfection as envisioned?
After all, this logo may be the first point of recognition of your company or your company’s products by customers and prospective customers alike. Since it is the company’s brand that appeals to the prospective customers, then a company must strive to ensure the proper packaging of its brand.
Positivity has to be seen by the outside world as well as by the staffs of the company in the entire brand and branding approach of the company. One of the greatest tool if not the greatest tool of the “brand packaging” of any company or its products surely is the “logo”. Since this logo represents the company in the corporate, legal and commercial world, and will constitute a cardinal basis of the identification of its products, then the positive vision of the company can and should be woven into the company logo and product logo.
Ideally, logos are pictorial summarization of the company’s attainable future expressed creatively. It is surely a plus, a positive indicator indeed if a company or product logo fulfils this criteria. For a company to toll this path in the conceptualization of its company logo. The logo design must go beyond merely having the good characteristics of a logo which includes simplicity, creativity, memorability and appropriateness. There has to be more to it, it must communicate “positivity”. Such positivity must have stemmed from the perfect imagination of the company’s future as reflected in the vision (and mission) statement of the company. Such vision statement must have highlighted the imagined and attainable future of the company .
Now, lets consider an example of a Company whose logo communicates and reflects their vision statement in pictorial form. Thus, we are looking at a company’s logo that suit the description we have hitherto discussed. A vivid example of such company is 9mobile Nigeria Limited (formerly Etisalat). Going by this Vision Statement of the Company:
“Our vision is to be the leading and most admired telecoms company in Nigeria”~ 9mobile
Clearly, the company wants to achieve a “goal” in Nigeria. This goal as stated, is to be “…the leading and most admired telecoms company…”. If you are familiar with the Nigerian telecoms industry, you would have known that 9mobile is the latest telecommunication brand in Nigeria (as at the time of writing this article). Yet it envisioned for itself such a “positive goal”, which I believe the management of the company might have regarded as attainable. The focal point in this analysis is to see how it embeds the aforementioned vision in its logo. Below is this logo:
Obviously, the simplicity in the above logo is clear to see. With just the figure 9 containing a speaker designed form within it emitting sounds, and that was it. Regardless of the simplicity, the message is loud enough to reflect fully the vision of the company as highlighted above. Personally, I am passionate about football as a sport therefore I am quite familiar with what the number 9 signifies on the field of play. The number 9 player in a football team is the striker, naturally a goal getter. The main job of the number 9 is to score for the team. With this in mind, coupled with the fact that the 9 concept is synonymous with Naija (9ja). Which represents a funkified manner with which Nigerian Youths refer to their beloved country; Nine mobile clearly express their “goal” as a communication company in their logo with such simplicity and creativity.
